Working in construction can be a pretty dangerous job. As in any job, it’s important to be aware of your working conditions and take steps to ensure your safety. Your employer should do all they can to keep you and your co-workers safe, but it’s also important to do everything you can to remain safe on the job.
Protective Gear
There are plenty of injuries that can occur at a construction job site if you aren’t wearing the proper protective gear including boots, hard hats, gloves, masks or goggles, and much more. Know what you need and make sure you’re always wearing it. Just forgetting to wear one piece of safety equipment can result in a disastrous injury.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Even though construction sites typically have similar settings, they each have different potential hazards you should watch out for. Be alert of any machinery including where it’s located and when it’s in operation. Look out for overhead lines, low clearances, obstructions, underground utilities, and more. Be sure to report any unsafe conditions to your supervisor.
Climbing Ladders and Stairs
Be sure to inspect ladders and stairs before you step on and climb them. When given the choice, use aerial lifts of elevated platforms. Make sure guardrails are installed and use a body harness or safety net system. Avoid using metal ladders on windy or stormy days and use a ladder that’s at least three or four feet taller than your desired location.
Practicing Proper Posture
Use a small and handy tool belt so you can stay easily balanced. Be sure to lift properly using your knees instead of your back to reduce and eliminate backaches. When picking or carrying a heavy load avoid twisting your body.
